Having put out a few singles, kind of finding my feet with whatever my sound is, I'd been writing more all the time. After a while there were a few songs that just sounded good together, so assumed that maybe it'd form an EP or something. Time went on, more ideas followed and then tried to pare down the tracks to be an EP, when I laughed and thought...OK, maybe this could be something bigger.
One of the benefits of being a 'one person band' is trying out a bunch of different sounds and I think that's what I've found a different experience about piecing together a bigger piece of work. There's tracks that might be more my core sound - mainly alt-rock kind of vibes but then bringing in a bit of acoustic...but with the slightly broken drum machine sound driving it, also surprisingly ending up doing a bit of spoken word in there too. Illuminate was born from a driving bassline that reminded me of Bjork's 'Army of Me' but then started leaning a little towards the Deftones-type area. Signals was just bass and drums as an experiment, which I kind of liked - bass harmonics and with a lot in the low end, giving the vocals the higher end.
I'd not done a recording project so big before so doing this was a really fun thing to try - giving myself a bit more space to play. I genuinely didn't think I'd finish the tracks without getting distracted and working on something else, so for me, just finishing it is a win. If people out there like it, then that's a massive bonus!
